Choosing treatment

Choosing a System

Can one whole-home product solve every water concern?

Usually not. Sediment filtration, carbon filtration, ion-exchange softening, physical scale management, reverse osmosis, and UV disinfection perform different jobs. A home may need several compatible stages arranged in the correct order.

Does UV remove sediment, hardness, chlorine, taste, odor, or TDS?

No. UV is a microbiological treatment stage. It does not filter particles or sediment, remove dissolved minerals, soften hard water, reduce TDS, or remove chlorine, taste, or odor. Those concerns require separate treatment.

What is the difference between a water softener and a physical descaler?

An ion-exchange water softener removes calcium and magnesium and produces softened water. A physical descaler is intended to manage scale behavior without removing those minerals, so hardness and TDS readings generally remain similar before and after treatment.

Should I test my water before choosing a system?

Yes when the source is a private well, rainwater, storage tank, or when the concern involves bacteria, iron, manganese, sulfur odor, hardness, lead, arsenic, or another specific contaminant. City-water customers should review the current utility report and consider a tap test when the concern may come from the building plumbing.

Should I install pre-filtration before UV?

Often yes. Suspended particles and fouling can reduce UV performance. Confirm turbidity, visible sediment, iron, manganese, hardness, and the inlet-water limits stated for the exact UV model before choosing the pretreatment sequence.

Where should UV be placed in the treatment order?

The order depends on the water report and equipment. A common approach is sediment treatment and chemistry treatment before UV, with UV placed near the end of the treatment train. Follow the model manuals and have the final sequence reviewed for the actual application.

Sizing and installation

Sizing & Installation

How do I choose the correct whole-home flow rate?

Use peak simultaneous demand rather than average daily use. Confirm the main pipe size, operating pressure, likely fixture demand, water quality, and the product's rated performance under those conditions.

Can household size alone determine system capacity?

No. Household count is only one planning input. Peak flow, hardness or contaminant loading, pressure, plumbing, treatment objective, and regeneration or service requirements can also affect capacity.

Can the equipment be installed horizontally or vertically?

Do not assume one orientation works for every model. Use the exact installation manual and preserve the required flow direction, drainage, electrical access, air release, and service clearance. Contact Glonyx before purchase when the available space limits orientation.

Can I install the equipment outdoors?

Only when the exact model and enclosure are rated for the intended environment. Otherwise protect equipment from rain, direct weather, flooding, freezing, excessive heat, ultraviolet sunlight, and physical impact.

Can I install the equipment myself?

Installation requirements vary by product and location. Plumbing, electrical work, drainage, bypass valves, pressure control, disinfection, permits, and local codes may require a qualified professional.

What should I confirm before the equipment arrives?

Confirm the exact model, connection type, pipe size, pressure, peak flow, power, drain availability, installation environment, treatment order, bypass arrangement, and clearance for replacing lamps, sleeves, cartridges, tanks, or valve components.

UV and UVC LED

UV Systems

What is the difference between conventional UV and UVC LED systems?

Both use germicidal ultraviolet energy, but the light source, controls, operating behavior, service parts, and rated conditions can differ. Do not interchange UV lamps, LED modules, drivers, ballasts, sensors, or controllers between systems.

Should the UV system stay on all the time?

That depends on the model. Many conventional low-pressure UV lamp systems operate continuously, while some UVC LED products are flow-activated. Follow the exact controller and product manual rather than switching the unit off between normal uses.

When should I replace a UV lamp or UVC LED module?

Use the model-specific runtime or calendar interval. A UV lamp may still glow after its useful germicidal output has declined. UVC LED module life and replacement instructions also vary by model, so the controller status and manual take priority.

When should I clean or replace the quartz sleeve?

Inspect the quartz sleeve during scheduled service and clean it when mineral or organic fouling is present. Replace a sleeve that is cracked, chipped, scratched, persistently cloudy, or unable to seal correctly. Isolate power and depressurize the system before service.

What should I do if the UV system shows an alarm or fault?

Use the exact manual to identify the alarm. Check power, lamp or module seating, ballast or driver connections, sensor status, flow-switch state, service hours, and water flow only when it is safe to do so. Do not assume water is microbiologically treated while the system is offline or faulted.

Can UV make an unsafe water source safe by itself?

No single device replaces source correction, certified testing, proper pretreatment, correct sizing, installation, maintenance, and post-installation verification. Follow local health-authority instructions after a positive microbial result or water advisory.

Softening and scale management

Softening & Scale Control

Will a physical descaler lower hardness or TDS readings?

Generally no. Physical scale-management products do not remove dissolved calcium, magnesium, or other dissolved solids, so standard hardness and TDS readings are not expected to fall in the way they do after ion-exchange softening or reverse osmosis.

Can a physical descaler replace a water softener?

Not when the goal is truly softened water or measurable hardness removal. A descaler may be considered when the goal is scale management and the source water falls within the product's stated operating limits.

Will a descaler remove existing heavy scale immediately?

Do not expect immediate removal of established heavy scale. Results depend on water chemistry, temperature, usage, plumbing condition, and the selected product. Existing heavy scale may require separate cleaning or equipment service.

Does a conventional water softener require salt and a drain?

A conventional ion-exchange softener normally requires regeneration salt, a suitable drain connection, electrical power when applicable, and a correctly sized bypass and plumbing arrangement. Follow the exact valve and system manual.

How much salt will a softener use?

Salt use depends on hardness, household demand, resin capacity, regeneration settings, efficiency, and water conditions. It cannot be determined accurately from household size alone.

How soon should I notice a difference?

Softened-water effects may be noticeable quickly after the system is commissioned and the plumbing is flushed. Scale-management results can take longer and should be judged by ongoing scale behavior, not by expecting hardness or TDS readings to disappear.

Maintenance, parts, and warranty

Maintenance & Warranty

How often do filters, lamps, sleeves, modules, or softener parts need service?

Use the exact product manual together with runtime, calendar time, pressure drop, water quality, alarms, salt use, fouling, and observed performance. Service intervals for filters and lamps, sleeves, modules, or softener parts vary by model and water condition.

How do I identify the correct replacement part?

Before ordering a replacement part, record the complete product model and serial information from the nameplate, then confirm the original part number, dimensions, wattage, voltage, connector, generation, and compatible controller or ballast. Appearance alone is not enough.

What warranty applies to Glonyx products?

Complete Glonyx systems carry a 3-year limited warranty. For GX-UV-AE systems, this includes the housing and controller supplied with the system. Glonyx replacement parts and accessories purchased separately carry a 1-year limited warranty against verified defects in materials or workmanship. Normal wear, depletion, and scheduled replacement are not covered. Earlier purchases retain their original written terms. See the Warranty page for conditions and exclusions.

Do I need to register the product for warranty coverage?

No registration requirement is stated in the current Glonyx limited warranty. Keep dated proof of purchase, the product model and serial information, installation records, and service history because they may be needed to evaluate a claim.

What information should I send for troubleshooting or warranty review?

Start with your order number, if available, your product model, and a short description of the issue. For troubleshooting or warranty review, we may also ask for proof of purchase, photos, installation details, or relevant operating information.

What should I do after a positive microbial test or local water advisory?

Follow local health-authority instructions and any immediate safety measures they provide. Do not rely on a storefront FAQ as an emergency water-safety plan. Use appropriate microbial testing and review the relevant source, treatment, and verification steps before resuming normal use.
